 Local networking
« Thread Started on Dec 12, 2007, 4:10am »

Helloooo

I'm quite a shy creature at heart and the idea of networking absolutely terrified me at first! I thought it would be all sharp-suited businessmen talking a load of twaddle ...

Thankfully, I came across more selective networking meetings - not those that charge £700+ for membership each year and another £45 per breakfast meeting where I'd more than likely fall nose-down into my plate of frazzled bacon and runny eggs, bored silly.

Instead I learnt that it is best to be very selective about where you go ... there's usually networking events that fit your niche market and if there isn't, then why not set one up yourself?

For example, CanDoCanBe (.com) run monthly networking events in the Surrey area, for example - these are aimed at women in business.

I also attend a couple of networking meetings in London which are aimed exclusively at complementary therapists/alternative medicine practitioners - then there are Ecademy networking meetings which seem to sprout up in every town every other month or so.

Your local Chamber of Commerce is also likely to hold networking meetings which - even if you aren't a member - you can invariably attend for a nominal fee.

One of the networking groups I was really interested in attending was part of my professional organisation; however, after a few emails expressly asking WHERE the meetings were held (having no car, I'm heavily reliant on trains!) I gave up and set up my own, with my organisations' help!

In fact, because I was so fearful of the word networking (which still makes me shiver, truth be told!) our group's very first session was called "Synergy is fun for everyone" - which made people think of networking in a different light. If anyone is interested, they can have a look at the presentation at http://fhtswlondon.wordpress.com/calenda....n-for-everyone/

I'm back out on the networking path in early January ;)
